I am going to discuss the modifications that I made to my 2001 Porsche Carrera 4 911 (996 generation). I am going to write four separate articles breaking each one down into the following categories: overall, performance, interior, and appearance. Why did I modify my car? To be honest, the 996 is a great platform and was probably my favorite car to drive (manual with hydraulic steering); however, it was not the fastest and to be honest, the interior, in my opinion, was pretty dull. Therefore, I decided to make a few modifications to it, and once I got the mod-bug, it bit me hard and I kept on going. Today I am going to focus on the interior modifications that I made, and then I will follow-up with specific examples, and more in-depth detail of each modification and was it worth it? For a little backstory, I owned my 996 from 2011-2016. When I bought this car technology was advancing and being able to play your Ipod or phone through your radio was quite popular, not to mention satellite radio, navigation, etc. therefore, the first mod I made was to upgrade the radio with some modern technology. Therefore, I installed the Kenwood DNX-6960 and loved it. Installing it was a bit of a project and took some time but the finished project was well worth the effort. I mounted the bluetooth microphone right above the steering wheel column and put the GPS nav antenna in front of the security device. The GPS worked perfectly fine without having to hook it up to the speed cable. This system includes DVD, bluetooth, Garmin GPS (my favorite GPS), satellite/HD radio compatible, and Ipod connectivity. You can also attach the back-up camera to this system for $169.00 or $199.00, depending on the camera you buy - installation is not included. if I was to upgrade the radio today, I would use the Porsche Classic Communication Plus, which includes Apple Car play and is an exact fit. You can find this radio at Suncoast Porsche: https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/skupccmplus.html Being inspired by the 997 GT3RS on the Top Gear, USA Road Trip special, which had the Agate Grey with red accents, I decided to add red accent pieces to my agate grey 996 as well. First, I ordered grey and red floor mats and then proceeded to spray paint some of the interior pieces in Guards red. I purchased the spray paint from Automotive Touchup Paint: https://www.automotivetouchup.com/. You w . You will see pics of the pieces I spray painted as I continue. The next interior modification that I made was the Suncoast Sport pedals. The modification looked great, but I don't think Suncoast offers these pedals anymore since they were not an OEM product. The installation on these pedals was not the easiest since you had to drill holes in to the metal pedals and then mount the metals onto the metal platform. I then decided to change the leather steering wheel, gear shift, and brake lever to Alcantara. All of these are pretty easy to do. The hardest one to change out was the steering wheel. You have to be careful of the airbag when changing the steering wheel but if you just unhook the battery, you don't have to worry about the airbag deploying. Before: After: Sorry for the poor quality photos, the camera phones back in the day were not as good as to what we have now. The last project I decided to take on since my leather seats were cracked, was the Recarro Sport seats. This took some time since I bought the seats used off E-bay and one of the electric motors did not work on the new seats. I swapped the motor from my old seats out and replaced it with my new seats. Even having to do that, it was not that hard of a project. Here are a few pics of the interior once I finished: I realize that these color schemes isn't for everyone but at the time I loved them and was extremely happy with the results. At several Cars and Coffee events that I attended, multiple people told me that this was the best 996 interior that they have ever seen and asked who did the interior. Let me know what you think? Also, if you have any specific questions about any of the modifications that I made please ask. I will be glad to answer or assist if I can. If you owned a 996 and made some interior mods yourself, please post them, would love to see them.
